The 4.90 Extreme took the win light @ Roxboro Dragway on Saturday night in the 1st of 3 scheduled Shoot-outs this year. The 4.90 Outlaws of Va. were hot on our tarheels. We had a full sixteen car field and 2 dead on 4.90's in qualifying it was a tightly contested field of cars. With our own Tim Miller (winner of our 1st race last Oct. @ Piedmont) in his Pontiac Firebird taking out Outlaw Mike Alexander in his 65 corvette in the finals to bring home a 4 ft tall trophy and 2500.00 in cash. Both guys fought their way through the field of great cars and drivers, former race winners and track champions one of which is Jimmy Willams, father of the 4.90 (2012 VMP track champion) and who ran 5-4.92's during the day! Congrats to David White for #1 Qualifier and semis winner. Thanks also to the 2 fast Renegade cars of Art Jones and Larry Pearce for doing a great job of trying to tame their beast's for the night. Congrats to David White for #1 Qualifier. We all would like to thank Roxboro Motorsports Park and Staff for putting on the show and allowing us to race their, Bubba Turner and crew done a good job on getting the race in even after a early oil down and fast falling temps. Thanks to all the 4.90 heads-up racers who showed up to make it a great race and have committed to help make this a great class!
Im gonna try to summarize our 2cd race of the season at the farm, But 1st I want to thank God for keeping Jeremy Huffman and Robert Benge safe during what could have been a tragedy. We are so glad both guys are OK. We had 18 cars to start with, then Lucky Dan Ferguson threw a rod in the pits and after 2cd rd qualifying, we had the field set with 17 cars. There were a lot of guys Id never met before, who over the winter actually reworked their cars to run the 4.90. We want to thank all you guys for your hard work and commitment to making this class work.
As always Tim Miller was on top of his game with a 490.6 for #1 qualifier, For which he was paid $100 from Wyo Racing and Rods,(thanks darrell) and handed the bye run into 1st round. Our #2 qualifier was the one and only Adam Phipps who ...pulled from Surquoinsville, TN to race in his small block powered Bickle Monte C. We had a
total of 3 small blocks runnin the 4.90. Unfortunate for Tim Miller ,Craig Bradshaw showed up and took him out. In the 2cd round it was Dave Lambert driving the Hood racing entry getting the bye after taking out the one and only Ford powered car in the field, which was me, even after i cut a 001 light i couldnt touch the 4.90.8. he laid down.
The 3rd round bye was givin to Randy Anderson in his 1967 small block Camaro, who was joined in the semis along with Todd Baker and the Charles Harris camaro drivin by Skinny kid. It was getting late and because there was a oil down earlier and the accident and then as we were in the lanes @ 11:45 there was another oil down so they had to call it. With the Hood entry getting 4th place and the Charles Harris car with the bye to the finals along with Todd Baker and Randy Anderson it would have been a great finale im sure. A big thanks to Farmington dragway for having us and a big tip of the hat to Mark Joyce for doing a great job as race director.
Dont forget May 12th Mooresville Dragway, 1st 4.90 PTRA Points race
Quick summary of the 4.90 Extreme @ mooresville PTRA's 1st points race.
19 cars showed up for whats quickly becoming the class to run in, After two rounds of qualifying we had 6 yes 6 4.90 runs from 490.1 to 490.8. We had racers from 3 different states in all kinds of cars from a older Tommy Mauney Promod to a 2012 Stroupe mustang to 3 small block cars. 1st round went off with out a hitch as I got put out with a 002 red against the cotton farmer mcswain and his Trans am.
2cd round was real close with several dead ons as racers were getting their cars dialed in. As the race went on it was evident that two of our local guys Tim Miller and Skinny Kid driving for Charles Harris were on the hunt and another local Jeff Vail was there to make a statement also. The #1 qualifier James Bunton wa...s also right there with 00"s all day and runnin bout a .91, Then we had the small blocks of Randy Anderson and Adam Phipps from Tn. all trying to get to the quarter finals.
The 4th rd wasnt as good as the right lane claimed the small block Bickle MonteCarlo of Phipps with two hits to the wall.( Im seeing a trend here against Monte Carlo's)
In the other lane was Tim Miller who watched it all as he crossed the finish line to earn him a bye to the finals. Phipps ended up with a semi finish! In the 3 car semi it was Jeff Vail and his Smith Bros camaro v/s the #1 qualifier James Bunton and his T/M corvette, Vail had to lift when he got a little loose at the mhp cone. And in the final round it was Tim Miller in his 1997 chassis engineered Trans am with a .15 light on a 4.92 to take his third 4.90 race win. Congrats to Tim on his victory and thanks to all of the racers that showed up to support the 4.90 Extreme.
Thanks to Tony Brown and staff @ Mooresville Dragway for makin it all happen and dont forget we will be back there to run with the Mad Dawgs on May 26,2012.
